Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
Drive: Watched it with the GF who hadn't seen it. First off, it improves on a second viewing. I can see serious cult status for this one. But mainly posting to share an observation she had. She noted so much of the film is in shades of orange and teal, calling it the new black and white. I realized as I watched it she was right. This is absolutely shot like a b&w film. So great.

Simon Yuen shows up as a hunchbacked old master who teaches a myriad of styles to lead Lee I-Min, including monkey kung fu, drunken boxing, and the crippled fist technique.
EDIT: According to the opening credits, the name of the film's director is Tong Dick.
Barbie in a Mermaid Tale 2 - Well, the CGI surfing scenes weren't bad. The English-language voice of one of Barbie's friends (I think) was supplied by Nakia Burrise (who once played a Power Ranger named Tanya), who's not only from my hometown, but her brother was a close friend of my brother for a long time.
Super 8 - I actually liked it a lot. The adolescent characters were endearing enough that I'm able to forgive not getting a good look at the giant alien space monster. I also like that, apart from the EVIL MILITARY OFFICER, all of the adult characters had at least one redeeming quality to them, including the stoner who works at the photo shop. I also like that each of the kids gets to make some contribution to the resolution and that the movie plays fair with putting them in complete mortal danger. I think the scene that got me the most was when Joe was teaching the girl how to be a zombie. It was just perfect in terms showing the chemistry between two adolescents that like each other but haven't expressed it yet.

Maybe there was a Classic Illustrated comic version some one lent him.

I have never, ever heard of this behavior, and I'm having a difficult time figuring out how it's even supposed to be biomechanically possible.

It's a sick joke meant to make the other person look [EDIT: like they have cerebral palsy or something of that nature]. EDIT: The gesture is that the arm is bent, the elbow is sticking out to the side, and the hand is slightly bent at the wrist.

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
That was one of the reasons I though that the director, Refn, drew from Michael Mann as his inspiration because Mann was a good one for using shades of color in his filming, especially in the 80s. In Mann's case, he was among the directors who used the blue and pink tints.

It never offends, and it's never boring. It's just simply too familiar, and not just because it's a remake.
The effects, while good, seem borrowed from other films. The robot police officers who constantly dog Quaid (this time played by Colin Farrel) look like the clone troopers from Star Wars. The city area where he lives at the beginning of the film looks like a cross between the city from Blade Runner, and the one from the live action Super Mario Bros. movie, of all things. And a lot of the action sequences have the feel of a video game.
That said, the mind-bending aspect of whether all of this is real or not is still present (though not as strong as in the earlier film), and it's generally well made all around. There's just no real need for this. The movie throws in some references to the earlier movie (even the three-breasted woman shows up), and while it tries to find its own identity, it's never truly successful.
Considering I walked in with low expectations, this was better than I expected, but not quite strong enough to recommend.
Full review to come. | | | | |
I wonder who's genius idea it was to NOT go to Mars in the remake?

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
No doubt this was a love letter to Mann. The whole thing was a lost 80s actioner.

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
Ah, so it's not a remake of Total Recall, it's a re-adaptation of the Dick story that uses the original movie's name for branding purposes. Got it.

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
But they have thrown in some references to the earlier movie, like a three-breasted woman, and a reference to Arnold's fat woman disguise that he used to try to get through security. ("Two weeks...").

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
Yeah, I doubt the Dick story has much to do with any of this, unless the movie ends with mouse-sized aliens showing up.

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
Total Recall or as it could also be called "Kate Beckinsale is The Terminator" and I'm betting the director's cut will be called "Hey, Isn't My Wife Awesome?" Kate in this version is in the role that took actress Sharon Stone and actor Michael Ironside playing two different characters to encompass. She plays the fake wife of Doug Quaid (Collin Farell) and when she's not beating him up she's laying the smackdown on his real girlfriend Melina (Jessica Beil). She's the super agent tasked to keep her eye on the brain wiped Quaid and when he starts getting his memory back she decides to kill him against her bosses orders. Why would she want so badly to kill him? Maybe he was really bad in the sack. There is something going on about a revolution, robot armies and the occasional cameo by Bryan Cranston and Bill Nighy, but really that's all secondary to Kate Beckinsale kicking ass and taking names. Note: I did really enjoy this movie even if it did feel like cyber punk version of The Bourne Identity, and the action sequences were really quite fantastic. Biggest criticism I have is the third act got a pit clunky to the point of not making much sense. Still fun though. Sadly mouse-sized aliens failed to show up.

Re: Micro Reviews of Another Kind
For those of you who NEED a mouse-sized aliens fix after no less than two Total Recall movies fail to deliver the goods.
