 Movies of the 90s
Either I have seen all that is worth seeing in the 90s already or I may just be a little ignorant, but I was running through my Netflix list and there's a crapload of movies in the 2000s, a pretty good selection from the 80s, a bounty of movies from the 60s and 70s, several 50s, mostly noir and classic horror, but still pretty good representation from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. In the 90s, I have eight movies on list that comprises 212 movies:
The Straight Story Everest: IMAX Hellcab Waiting for Guffman Black Robe Forgotten Silver Cat's Don't Dance The Mask of Zorro (And several MST3K movies, but the movies themselves - not 90s)
Is it just that I've seen everything worthwhile from that decade - Tarantino, Christopher Guest mockumentaries, David Lynch, Sam Raimi, Disney's animation revival and the Pixar debuts, I've seen all the top grossing movies, so maybe that's it - the video boom and everything - maybe I've just seen the 90s. But still, for our kind of movies? Is there nothing?

 Re: Movies of the 90s
Is Black Robe the one set in Canada back in the 17th/18th century? If it is, then I watched it in my French class back in high school. It was crazy violent and our teacher had to get up several times to stand in front of the TV during the nude scenes. It was pretty darn entertaining, though.

Well, since I usually tackle the Asian front:
Anything Jet Li and Jackie Chan did during the 1990s The Blade Burning Paradise Ashes of Time Moon Warriors Hard Boiled Peace Hotel Eko Eko Azarak (I haven't seen this series, but a lot of people recommend it) Zeiram Zeiram 2 Moon Over Tao

On the similar front of Asian movies, Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express and Fallen Angels are both well worth checking out.

 Re: Movies of the 90s
Believe it or not, Full Moon, of all companies, made a bunch of interesting stuff during the first two thirds of the decade, before their distro deal with Universal fell apart. I remember you saying a while ago that you had just watched their version of The Pit and the Pendulum. Now see if you can find Hideous!, Subspecies, and Dark Angel: The Ascent.

 Re: Movies of the 90s
I recall you saying that Dark Angel: The Ascent was a very intriguing film from a theological standpoint. I almost had the chance to watch it back in 1995. My neighbor, who was celebrating his 7th b-day, had it in his hands at the video store, but ultimately went with the second Leprechaun film.

 Re: Movies of the 90s
I have not seen Hideous or Dark Angel. I am a big fan of the entire Subspecies series. The quality was a frustrating mixed bag of good and awful decisions, many times within the same movie, but Anders Hove as Radu and Denice Duff as his reluctantly turned heroine made for some better than average chemistry - at least as full moon was concerned

Drunken Master 2 / Legend of Drunken Master was released in 1994, wasn't it? That's some absolutely essential viewing.

Unless you're really into the self-aware meta-crap slashers, uber-serial killers, or Universal monster re-imaginings, I'm hard pressed to name ten other domestic horror films from that decade. Weird.

 Re: Movies of the 90s
I love REFLECTING SKIN and I am also a fan of Jarmusch: GHOST DOG and NIGHT ON EARTH
I might be throwing out the obvious, but three of my favorite films of all time are from the 1990s: ED WOOD, DEAD ALIVE and especially 12 MONKEYS. And, of course, anything and everything the COHENS were working on in the 90s. MiILLER'S CROSSING straight through to LEBOWSKI, not a bad movie between them!

 Re: Movies of the 90s
I love all of the early Peter Jackson films of the 90s (and yes, I think of Heavenly Creatures as a horror film, so maybe my idea of the genre is a little different than others) and without question JACOB'S LADDER! Great film. Yeah, I'm not naming ten. It wasn't a grand decade for horror. I have always heard good things about Tim Ritter films, but I've never wanted to waste my time with them.

 Re: Movies of the 90s
I have heard about Reflecting Skin. That does sound like one I'd have to pick up.
@ Junie - Tim Ritter? Never heard of him...... care to enlighten me?
I'm big on Coens and Jackson's first five movies - Forgotten Silver is on my list and I anticipate it coming up on my queue. Jackson is just like Paul Morrissey without Warhol's money - enormous filmmaking skills combined with a gleeful penchant for bad taste. Meet the Feebles especially.
Jarmusch is a taste I respect, but never acquired for some reason. I have seen a few of his movies and enjoyed each one: Ghost Dog, Night on Earth, Down by Law, and segments of Mystery Train. I have nothing to criticize, Jarmusch just never caught fire with me like the Coens did. I may need to explore that.

 Re: Movies of the 90s
To add to the American list, there was also The Prophecy, with Christopher Walken as a murderous angel Gabriel, and Viggo Mortenson as Satan, which was released in 1995. You also have Split Second with the immortal Rutger Hauer, Darkman with Liam Neeson, Guyver:Dark Hero, and Dollman (with Tim Thomerson). Oh yeah, and I Come In Peace and Six-String Samurai as well!
There's quite a lot to look at on the 90's HK film front, like Kung Fu Cult Master, Tai Chi Master, Saviour of the Soul, Iron Monkey, The Storm Riders, and New Dragon Gate Inn.
Japanese cinema of the time had a lot of horror to boast of, like the Ringu series, but they also had the new Gamera trilogy by Shusuke Kaneko, along with the aforementioned Zeiram movies, along of course, with the Heisei Godzilla series as well.

Oh, I haven't seen Six string Samurai! It sounds like one of those films like 'Bubba ho Tep' where the concept is better than the film could ever be (just my opinion though). In your opinion, is it worth watching?

 Re: Movies of the 90s
People always say that about Jarmusch. And I can understandt. 'Dead Man' never wowed me, but I've seen it three times and I somewhat respect it. But I've never embraced it, and I feel the same about the cigarets and Coffee series. Kind of interesting, but ... I like that description of Jackson! I can't say that I've loved anything that he's done since 'Two Towers'. Yeah, I don't care much for Return of the King, even though there are elements that are amazing. King Kong I don't care for. Fay Wray was justifiably frightened of the big guy, Jessica Lange had pity on him. Naomi Watts -she's a total furry! Creepy. The introduction of Tim Ritter in this interview describes the guy better than I can . http://www.filmthreat.com/interviews/113/
