Post The Presence
I would really like to get feedback on what other people thought about this film. Some people found this movie to be an intriguing and subtle ghost story. I thought it was akin to 'the Room'.

Mira Sorvino (did I spell that right? well, you know who I'm talking about) returns to her childhood safe haven to a cabin in the woods. You have to take a boat to get to the cabin. It is super isolated. But she's not alone, because the cabin is haunted by THE GHOST OF MORRISSEY! Not really, but if Morrissey came out and sang 'Jack the Ripper', that would make the film better IMO.

There is no dialogue for a very long time. Which is great, I love non-verbal storytelling. Unfortunately, nothing happens for a very long time either. Morrissey wannabe hangs around, stares out of a window. Our lead lady doesn't seem too be as lively as he is.

Mira finds an article about a man who drowned in the lake. Could be the ghost. But maybe not. It is never explained.

The cabin is very quaint and charming. I think the director wanted it to look run down, as though it had been existing in the woods for a long time with no electricity. He failed. I think it's a beautiful little place. The outhouse however makes my skin crawl. The idea that you have to poke the hole with a stick in case spiders are around is terrifying to me! The spiders never show up though.

Whenever our leading lady uses the outhouse, a bird smacks into the side of it and kills itself, for no reason other than to make the audience jump. It's hilarious! But it's not meant to be played for laughs.

Mira's BF shows up and he's such a sweet and nice person. He cooks for her, is just a wonderful guy. He proposes to her before nearly falling to his death and losing the engagement ring (more on this later). You never really get the sense that he's pushing her on this relationship but that may be the case. Or not, because the movie never really explains to much about their relationship (are you sensing a pattern here yet?).

After accepting his proposal, she begins to withdraw from her. That's because someone is trying to come between her and her BF. That someone happens to be THE VERY DEVIL HIMSELF! no, seriously, he's an Irish man dressed in black who whispers horrible things into her ears. Then again, maybe it's not the devil. Once again, none of this is ever clearly explained.

So her and the BF have a huge crazy fight that just comes out of nowhere and we learn that she was raped by her father! This is possibly why the cabin is a special place for her, It has always been her safe haven. Or maybe it's because her salt-of-the-earth BF is being pushy and she needed to get away from him. Don't know. The script never really explains. The incest stuff is not played out too much in the movie either. It doesn't seem to be central to the story. She tears into this wonderful guy for no real reason. Buddy, get out of this relationship!!! Swim if you have to.

So the devil makes a deal with the ghost to kill the bf. Why? I'm not entirely sure. It is never really explained. But the ghost doesn't kill him, just knocks him out and hides him beneath the house (which leads to the last line of dialogue that cracked me up).

So the ghost rebels against Satan but everything is alright because out of F*#^ING NOWHERE the day is saved by the sudden unexplained appearance of BLACK JESUS! !!! Well, maybe he's Jesus. Or an angel. The script doesn't really explain. And the ghost is redeemed ... I guess.

and he's been watching over them all this time because he saved the BF from falling to his death! So he was a central character and we didn't know until he showed up ... ten minutes before the movie ends.

So the BF is alright and the wedding is back on- even though it shouldn't be! They are a horrible match for one another. The devil was doing that guy a favor. And a guy with a boat appears out of nowhere for no reason to whisk them back to civilization. But a man in a hoodie shows up at the end and begins to whisper things in boat guy's ear. Is he the Irish devil we have seen? Nope! Yet another unexplained person randomly showing up at the end of the movie for no reason.

Show don't tell, subtlety, these are all great things but we need an explanation for some of this stuff! Who the hell was the ghost, why was he there? Why does Satan want to break up the main character's relationship? If you got a story, don't just hint at it. ugh ... just UGH!!!

Thanks. I've been reading reviews for this and no one seems to be bothered by the stuff I mentioned above. It's an old fashioned ghost story with no noticeable special effects or CGI effects. It's a good looking movie and I wouldn't be against watching anything more from this director but ... it's hilarious. There's only one moment that's intentionally played for laughs that works in the entire film.

Nice review. I can't help you with the question of whether it's just you or the movie really is lame and stupid, because I'm just generally bored by ghost movies.

Actually, there is a way to delete bad posts, but you have to move fast on it, because it has a limited shelf life. When your post is new, you'll see two tiny little icons in the lower right corner. One has an orange exclamation point in it, the other a faint, blue "x." The "!" icon is always there; it's the button you push to call down the wrath of the mods on a post, and as such you'll see it on everybody's posts if you look closely. The "x" icon is the "delete" button; it appears only on your own posts, and only for a short time after they've been submitted-- I don't remember exactly how long. Anyway, if you click on it, you should get a dialogue box asking whether you're sure you want to delete, with the usual yes/no or okay/cancel buttons in it.

I think they are great when they are done well. I loved 'The Orphanage'. But good ghost movies are few and far between.
