Out of boredom tonight, I looked up Gamera on Wikipedia. In the "Millennium Era" entry, mentioned in the same paragraph as Tiniest Heroes, is this:
Quote:
Kadokawa Pictures (current owners of Gamera) and Cartoon Network have teamed up to make a Gamera animated series that will premiere in 2007.

I hadn't heard anything about this, but hey, cool.

Of course, it'll probably end up being more like Tiniest Heroes than the Kaneko Trilogy, but I'll probably still watch the damn thing. And really, if it's as decent as the GINO animated series, I'll probably end up enjoying it.

Here's the link: Gamera in the Millennium Era

I dunno, the more I see of the new Gamera movie the better it looks. It'll never compare to the Trilogy, but it looks like a fun time. A Gamera cartoon series could be pretty cool, too.

I'm sure Tiniest Heroes will be more fun than I'm expecting it to be (although I also think alienating all the new Gamera fans - such as myself - that Kaneko's movies created is a bad, bad idea), and hopefully the animated series will be fun, too.

But the idea of a Gamera animated series based on Kaneko's movies and done in a similar style to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and not just animation, but storytelling as well)...well, that's an idea that gives me an enormous geek-boner. Maybe the animated series will just develop its own continuity, keeping the good elements from all the versions of Gamera and giving us, yet again, an entirely new take on him.

As long as they don't try to be cute and clever. A cartoon show w/ a Gamera that looks like Squirtle would promise deep hurting.

Indeed; they need to take at least somewhat seriously. For instance, having the show focus on an 8-year-old boy whose pet box turtle turns into Gamera whenever monsters attack would be the worst thing ever associated with the Gamera franchise.

And I include Super Monster Gamera in that statement.

the spinoff of the godzilla 98 movie was actually a pretty good kaiju toon. I hope that the gamera cartoon is more on that level and less on the hannah barbara cartoon level. (how come godzuki hasn't popped up in an episode of birdman yet? They got just about everyone else that HB made...)

I do too - although hopefully with more monster action. I remembered the GINO cartoon being packed with monster fights when it was on, but more recently I bought the Monster Wars DVD, and was disappointed by how short most of the monster fights were - even the big showdown, with Godzilla taking on the Pseudo-MechaGodzilla, was disappointingly brief. I know it's only a half-hour show, but come on - it's not like there was that much plot going on.
