Post Hey, you know who impresses me....
Matthew Lillard, actually. He was mentioned recently in another thread and I began to think of what I had seen him in and realized that, even though a lot of the movies he is in are crap, he is usually one of the best things in them.

Aside from his dead-on looks and acting portrayal of Shaggy in the Scooby Doo movies, Lillard remains the memorable and interesting villain in Scream with all the better lines and intensity. And, aside from the hoot that was Meatloaf (another guy on my "impresses me" list), Lillard did a great job playing a thoroughly irritating spoiled brat prince in Uwe Boll's run-of-the-mill Dungeon Seige: Yadda Yadda Yadda

I thought he was fun in Hackers, but that role actually called for "spastic crack-monkey," which is what Lillard does quite well.

I also liked his portrayal of a character that (I hope) I was suppossed to have some level of aversion to (the flashback and dénouement of the film at least hint towards that) while still remaining nominally likeable in SLC Punk. The level of emotion he shows in the main narrative's ending is impressive and real.

Another person who, against my will, I'm impressed with in movies (and I believe BJ has agreed with my assessment in the past) is Justin Timberlake. He's a lot better in movies than he has any right to be.

I'll second Timberlake and note he has a great role in The Social Network, which was an amazing script about the dawn of Facebook. He's insanely funny.

Matthew Lillard was clearly the best thing about Wing Commander as well.

I should find a copy of this.

Yeah, I've seen that cliche POS, and let me tell you with all honesty. Matthew Lillard as Maniac was the best thing about that movie.

Take that Jurgen Prochnow. Yeah, I said it. Now next time don't flippin' phone in the WWII cliches you frikkin' invented in Das Boot!

Wait... must breathe... must breathe.... must...

Okay, so you were unimpressed by Jurgen Prochnow. Now, who are you impressed by?

Lillard was alarmingly good in the Scooby Doo films. I assume some sort of voodoo was involved in stealing Casey Kasem's voice. He and Linda Cardelini almost made those things watchable. One has to wonder how pissed Sarah Michelle Gellar was to be cast as 'hot female lead' and for a second time be significantly less attractive than 'nerdy sidekick.'

Speaking of Buffy, I always really really liked Nicholas Brendan as Xander. I'm sorry he doesn't seem to be getting any work these days - even as part of 'people from cancelled Joss Whedon shows who now get guest slots in other cancelled Joss Whedon shows.'

He's actually got a recurring role on Criminal Minds, as...well, okay, basically as Xander again (a deeply nerdy tech guy who's dating Penelope Garcia, the team's resident information guru), but hey, he's always welcome as far as I'm concerned, and he and Garcia are a very cute couple.

Let's not skim too quickly over Meatloaf! The Man Who Has A Different Name In Every Endcredit has been positively impressing me from the first time I saw him in Rocky Horror Picture Show, and last gave me that familiar happyjolt of recognition in, I think, Focus.

Oh, Mr. Loaf is completely awesome. Hell, he was fun and believable in Spice World, for goodness' sake. And one of the best things about Bloodrayne, if I'm remembering correctly.

You are. He and Billy Zane were the only cast members who appeared to A) understand exactly what kind of movie they were in, and B) have any fun at all performing in it. Of course, they both got to exit the movie early, which might explain their bonhomie; everyone else was stuck there for the long haul, including the audience.
