Post Woman boinks an octopus
Reading Santo's Possession review recently jogged a memory of a movie I rented from the video store I worked at in college. The snippets I can recall involve a seedy apartment, a fair amount of gore, some shenanigans on a subway or possibly just a train, the octopus communicating telepathically with its host/lover/whatever, and a possibly a carnival. And get this, it's NOT the same pretentious arthouse woman-loves-an-octopus movie he watched! There are at least two of them, which if you ask me qualifies as a subgenre. There's a mindblower for you. The version I saw also touted itself as the unrated international cut, and was probably from the early 90's. I'm just too afraid to type "woman ****s octopus movie" into Google to find out.

The first movie that came to my mind was The Calamari Wrestler, but that was from 2004. At any rate, add it to this apparently ignored sub-genre of cephalopod-lovin'.

Did you doubt for an instant that I knew this one? Possession, 1981. Isabelle Adjani, Sam Neill. I love that one.

Not to be a party pooper, but Rags specifically said it wasn't that movie in his original post.

But he specifically said that it WASN'T Possession. I'm hard-pressed to think of an alternative, though: the '80s biopic of Hokusai (released internationally as Edo Porn) has a lengthy scene recreating the woodblock master's famed "Dream of the Fisherman's Wife" in which a woman does indeed boink a big, animatronic/puppet octopus, and Octopussy has a carnival, murders, and octopus imagery, but I haven't seen any other films where those specifics overlap.

Yeesh, there's three of them? And possibly more. No, it's not Calamari Wrestler either. The octopus in question looks sort of like the little one at the beginning of Octaman. I think the movie might be French. I'm pretty sure it was foreign, anyway.
