I so, so agree. And apparently early drafts of the script--back when it was written by Drew Goddard, with Peyton Reed attached as the director--did just that. That movie would have been 100x better.
Apparently 20th Century Fox has an addiction to mucking up their franchises.

word up, i love that movie! batman's origin story was done so properly that every time he donned the suit it really meant something on top of being a straight up ninja. I wanted two things from that movie, a justification for social control and batman to attack criminals like the predator, and i got them!

I could never get into comics and can take or leave superheroes but this looks super happy fun crazy time amazing. I'm so glad he decided to lay off the smack he's a wonderful actor.

Yep. One thing about superhero movies - its so much better when you have a damned interesting character inside the suit. I'm far more interested in Tony Stark. I know it was inevitable to have the new suit, but there is a part of me that would probably have been satisfied if the movie remain fixated on just that badass first generation suit.

I love how Downey seems to be playing this on a charisma level beyond that of a mortal man. He makes it clear why the media is obsessed with him. Then we get badass armor action, but first we get an awesome lead.

Having been at that Marvel Studios preview (that began with a clip-less Incerdible Hulk panel at 4:15pm Pacific Time, Saturday July 28th in the fabled Hall H), I can concur & confirm the chest device, though as I recently alluded to in the Grab "Baggins" thread, they also cut a shot of just how bullet-proof (but not <span style='font-size:7pt;line-height:100%'>heh heh</span> ricochet-proof) the Mark I's helmet is.
<minorrant> Oh, and Comic-Con's stance of recording screen-projected footage as "strictly prohibited" (a.k.a. "Please don't ruin it for all of us!") aside, I seem to vaguely recall Jon Favreau saying that the footage he would be showing the audience (twice) was for them and not to be posted on-line. Some people.... </minorrant>

Although I saw that bootleg that showed up online a few weeks ago, it didn't do any justice. I'm not even a huge Iron Man fan (he's cool, I just never got around to reading much of the stuff, although that may have to change), but that trailer caused multiple geekgasms. I think about half of it is the absolutely awesome use of Black Sabbath, and the rest is just that awesome suit. I even shushed Malorie in the middle of a sentence so I could watch in awe and wonder uninterrupted.
Whoever made that trailer should be elected president of the world.

I'm a long-time Shellhead fan (I only stopped reading the books regularly around the time of the whole "Teen Tony" travesty), and I have to say that the use of the Sabbath song that did it for me....I thought the trailer was cool up to that point (I'm a sucker for Downey....I've always loved his stuff)...but then when they start with the riffs from "Iron Man"....
I literally could feel my heart quickening and the hairs standing up on the back of my neck.

Check out the "Armor Wars" storyline; it's more or less the definitive Iron Man story, and features Tony going apeshit on every armored character in the Marvel universe, good or bad. After six issues, they run out of established armored characters for Tony to wail on and have to introduce a new one. The story also climaxes with the first appearance of my second favorite Iron Man suit.
All the Michelinie/Layton stuff after that was pretty cool, too, but if you don't like "Armor Wars," you're just not going to like the Iron Man comics.
I seriously almost cried the first time I saw the Comic Con trailer, it was so perfect.

The Sabbath song: I was expecting maybe brief usage in the background in the film but using it over the main action doesn't come off as cheesy so much as anthemic.

I doubt they're going to use it as the score, but I expect to hear it at least over the end credits, if not here and there in the film.
